“Jesse! Phone!” my mom yelled from downstairs. I was in sixth grade. My birthday was a month away and I was turning 12.
“Who is it?” I yelled, running down the stairs. She shrugged. “Hello? Yes. When? Okay. I’ll be there. Thank you.” I hung up the phone excitedly. It was hard to hold in my excitement while I was on the phone, but I was able to without screaming with excitement. “I got it!!!” I exclaimed excitedly to anyone that could hear me. “I got it!”
“The band?” my mom asked. I nodded. “Congratulations!” She gave me a big hug.
“We have a meeting next Saturday at ten. The band only has five guys, but eight of us were getting call backs to go back for a month, then they were going back to five.”
“Well, then you have to knock out three of those guys to get the spot. If you work hard, you can do it.”
“Mom, I don’t even have to do that. They said I was good enough that they decided to just put me in the band! I”m gonna go over and tell Ang!” I took off out the door and ran next door to my best friends house. I was extremely girl crazy, and this was a boy band. I knew we’d have all kinds of girls always screaming for us. This band was a dream come true. My best friend was a girl. Well, sort of. She wasn’t girly. She was into sports and didn’t mind getting a little dirty. She never liked playing with Barbie dolls or baby dolls, or play dress up or any of those kind of things. She hated make up, too. My friends all thought she was hot, but I didn’t see it. She was just my best friend.
“Hey Jesse!” She greeted me when I walked into the house. Her eyes were glued to the TV. She was watching the Valentine’s day episode of 7th Heaven that she taped. It was the one where the twins were born.
“Mary’s a great older sister, she taught me everything a guy could ever wanna know about sports, which is probably a good thing. Cuz Matt doesn’t have a lot of free time. Then there’s Lucy. Smart, sassy, and extremely emotional. I could live with any woman after living with her. And Ruthie. I’m sure you got a big file on her. She gets me into a lot of trouble, but she loves life, and I love her.” Simon Camden, the youngest Camden on the show prayed in the chapel.
“Watching your man, huh?” I asked teasing her. She was in love with the guy who played Simon. I sat next to her.
“Would you shut up?” she yelled and smacked me. She really hit pretty hard. A commercial soon came on and she stopped the video. “So, what’s up?’
“I got in the band!” I exclaimed. “I actually got in. They’re calling eight guys, then narrowing it down to five, and they said I actually got in. I don’t have to worry about this one too much. I mean, unless I completely blow it and all the sudden can’t sing or something.”
“You got in?!”
“Our first meeting is next Saturday?”
“You got in? You don’t even have to worry about this part, and you just got in?” She exclaimed. I nodded. “I’m so excited for you!” She threw her arms around me and hugged me.
“I’m so excited! Do you know how many guys tried out! I actually made it!”
“There were a ton of guys there. And most of them could actually sing, too. I’m so proud of you, Jess.”
“There were like 200 there, and thanks.”
“You aren’t gonna go become some huge star and forget all about me, are you?
“No way. Well hopefully I’ll get famous, but I won’t forget about you. How do you think I’m supposed to forget about my best friend in the world?”
“I don’t know, but you better not.”
“Hey, do you wanna come with me next Saturday to my meeting?”
“Sure. You’re allowed to bring people?”
“Yeah, but just a couple people.”
“Awesome! I’m coming. I wonder if the other guys are hot.” I laughed.
“Ang, you’re the best.”
